Congratulations to this week's award winners. Steve you won the mission statement award for always giving 100% effort in all of your work - a massive well done to you! Maisie impressed Mr Harrison and won the headteacher's mission statement award for being so caring, considerate and a good friend to all - well done Maisie! Ellie won the good work award for your hard work and understanding in RE this week - well done you! Emily and Ethan won the star writer award for their very persuasive letters applying to the Spartan and Athenian armies - a massive well done to both of you! Well done for another great week Year 5 and for making these decision so difficult. Have a lovely weekend! frown

Euan won the good work award for his great effort into his homework - well done Euan! Freya A won the star writer award for her brilliant poem about Spring - well done Freya! Joseph you impressed Mrs Kelly with your Maths this week - well done! Well done everyone for a great week and making these decisions so difficult as always. We've had a busy first week back, in Lourdes class! In Literacy we have been looking at a range of Spring poems, identifying their subject matter, style and language - ready to plan and write our own poems all about Spring. In Science we begun our topic of 'living things and their habitats' by exploring flowers and pollination. In Topic we begun exploring modern Greece and it's features, before placing Ancient Greece on a timeline. We enjoyed our first cricket season on Wednesday in the sun! Finally, we enjoyed going up to mass today to celebrate the beginning of our Summer term.

We've had a busy first week back in Year 5! In literacy we continued our class book 'Wonder' exploring the various characters in a range of ways. In big writing we wrote the beginning of a ghost story - well done everyone I was incredibly scared marking them!! In geography we compared Death Valley in California to our home Nottingham, exploring the similarities and differences. In RE we researched about the founder's of charities and what their missions might be. In French, we described the seasons using our French vocabulary. In Art we experimented with digital pictures and how we could change their effects.

Well done to our award winners this week. Isaac won the star writer award for his incredibly spooky story opening - well done Isaac! Harrison won the good work award for using his French vocabulary when describing the seasons in French. Arran won the mission statement award for being his polite, friendly and kind self - well done Arran! Szymon won the sports award for his great sportsmanship - well done Szymon!

We've had another fun week including our Christmas craft day, exploring 'The Highwayman' poem in more depth in literacy, learning more about our solar system in science and learning about Hillforts in history. Well done to our award winners this week. Carmen won the mission statement award for always being willing to lend a helping hand - well done and thank you for being so helpful Carmen! William Brown and Joe M won the good work award for their in depth and thoughtful answers when discussing characters in the poem 'The Highwayman' - well done boys! Maisie won the star writer award for her clear explanation on how the planets move around our solar system - well done Maisie! Well done everyone for another week of hard work and enthusiasm! This week we started our new literacy topic 'classic narrative poetry.' We have been focusing on the poem 'The highwayman' and explored how it builds up character, setting, mood and atmosphere through the language. You all really thought about the word choices in depth and what possible meanings the words may have so a massive well done everybody, myself and Miss Evans were incredibly impressed! In big writing we wrote a letter to Santa, trying to persuade him to give Monty the penguin a friend with Christmas. Again, myself and Miss Evans were incredibly impressed with your creative and persuasive letters. I really enjoyed reading them so well done!

Our good work award went to Freddie for his thoughtful and in-depth answers about language used in 'The Highwayman' poem - well done Freddie! Our mission statement award went to Joel for taking ownership and responsibility over his learning - well done Joel! Choosing a star writer award this week was even more difficult than usual as all of your letters to Santa were so great but with great difficulty me and Miss Evans managed to narrow it down to 6 winners - Emily, Isaac, Maya, Molly T, Dylan and Orla - well done you 6.

This week in literacy we wrote our own narrative on 'Monkey Symphony', developing characters through dialogue and action - well done children your writing was excellent and you really built up the characters well. In big writing we wrote a recount of our trip - again you tried really hard with this and they were exciting to read so well done everyone! In RE we learnt about Judaism - about the Passover, what the items on the Seder Plate symbolise and what a mezuzah is and why it is significant. In Science we learnt about the planets - their order and interesting facts about each one. In topic we learnt about the bronze age - what it meant by being a 'cooper child' and why both cooper and iron mining were so important to people in the bronze age.

Well done to our award winners this week. Dylan and Ellie you won the star writer awards for developing your characters through dialogue and action in your narrative of 'Monkey Symphony' so a massive well done to you two! Isabelle won the good work award for enthusiasm in French as she is always eager to have a go at speaking in French - well done Isabelle! Freya C won the mission award statement for being her polite, friendly and lovely self so a massive well done to you! Isaac and Will Bb also impressed their Maths teachers this week by being brilliant mathematicians - well done you two! Well done to this week's award winners and everyone else in Year 5 for your dedication and effort this week. Keep working hard and making these decisions so difficult! Have a lovely weekend! We've had an action packed week this week in Lourdes class. Today we enjoyed a day at the National Space Centre in Leicester, where we learnt lots of interesting facts about both our solar system and others beyond! Pictures will be uploaded soon! In literacy we continued looking at Monkey Symphony and added speech to the narrative in role play and, explored the 4cs and 5ss in more depth. In history we learnt about 'Skara Brae' and why this was significant in the Stone Age. In RE we begun looking at Judaism as we learnt about the significance of Passover and why this is celebrated. Role playing the film narrative 'Monkey Symphony' in literacy and playing our instruments in music

We've had an eventful first week back in Lourdes class. In Literacy we started our new topic 'Film Narrative'  by watching a short film called 'Monkey Symphony.' We explored the mood, atmosphere, characters, colours, composition, camera angles, story, sequence, setting, sound and symbol in depth - discussing the techniques the film uses and how these impact on the viewer. In big writing we continued our theme of film narratives and focused on a film called 'Tamara.' After discussing the film as a class we wrote letters to Tamara's dad, from her mum's perspective. We began our topic on the 'Stone to Iron Age' by discovering about the stone age. We found out what happened in the stone age, when it began and how people survived in this difficult time. We then used this knowledge to find out what weapons would help them survive before creating a persuasive advert trying to persuade Miss Blackburn why she should buy our stone age bow and arrow! In computing we researched pictures of stone age weapons using the safe search option and placing our pictures on a success criteria in order of importance. In Art we began our topic of 'Kandinsky Art' and produced some lovely Kandinsky style bonfire night pictures using oil pastels. In RE we continued exploring marriage, looking at the different stages of a wedding, what they symbolise and writing a handbook to inform people all about marriage.

 

Well done to our star writers this week Molly and Hollie-Mae. Your instructions on how to make a friendship bracelet were incredibly informative and clear, excellent work girls! Arran won the good work award for really focusing on improving his reading by reading every single night - brilliant work Arran your hard work and dedication is definitely showing. Dylan won the mission statement award for being his polite, friendly and generous self - well done Dylan, you're a pleasure to have in Lourdes class. We've had a busy but exciting week in Lourdes class. In Science we went to Hall Park academy to do some investigations involving forces. We discovered how to tip a cup of water over our head and not get wet and make a cotton woll launcher using a cup and a balloon! In DT we enjoyed making toys for a younger child, using CAMs. In Literacy we wrote up own final instructions on either how to make a friendship bracelet or how to make a toy using CAMs - well done on your writing, you all tried extremely hard! In RE we started looking at marriage and discussed what the promises of marriage mean. Well done on a great first half term everyone - you really impressed me with your dedication and enthusiam towards all subjects.

Friday 16th October 2015

We've been busy this week in Lourdes class. In literacy we produced instructions on how to make a friendship bracelet. We then followed them to see how effective they were and evaluate what we needed to improve. In  topic we learnt about both the continents Antarctica and Asia - producing an information poster on how to survive in Antarctica and hotseating each other about our lives in Asia and how they differ from ours. In science we learnt about the force of upthrust and tried to balance the forces of gravity and upthrust by making a plasticine boat that floats on water. In RE we looked at both our mission from God and also other people's missions too. In big writing we watched a video about a woman called Esther and wrote a diary entry all from her perspective - as always they were wonderful to read, well done everyone!

Well done to our award winners this week. Euan you won the star writer award for your emotive diary entry in the role of Esther - well done! Orla you won the mission statement award for giving up your play time to make someone a friendship bracelet who was struggling - well done you for being so kind. Alex J you won the good work award for clear and effective instructions on how to make a friendship bracelet - well done! Steve you impressed me in Maths for how quickly and confidently you could work through Maths Stories involving negative numbers - great work!

Well done Year 5 on all your hard work and efforts this week! In Literacy we explored the features of different instructional texts throughout the week. In big writing we persuaded Miss Blackburn to play our favourite games - well done everyone your letters were very persuasive. Now I just need to find the time to play all your games! In topic we researched the continent of Australia using the internet. In science we explored how surface area affected the amount of air resistant by making different size parachutes!

Euan you won the mission statement award for always being selfless and lending a helping hand - well done! Maya - you won the star writer award for your incredibly persuasive letter in big writing, well done! Carmen you won the mathematician award for your wonderful work on the grid method, well done! As always, well done everyone for working so hard this week and making these decisions incredibly difficult to make.

We've been working hard again this week in Lourdes class. In literacy we acted out an apache myth, followed by us gathering vocabulary throughout the week to plan our own version of it, which we wrote up in our big write. Well done on your wonderful myths everybody - I really enjoyed reading them and it really showed how much thought and effort you put into them! In Music we enjoyed playing our instruments some more and even began reading music. In RE we finished of our topic about our qualities and talents and wrote prayers to God, thanking him for being a good parent to us. In Computing, we learnt how to research information both effectively and safely on the internet. In Topic we researched and learnt all about the continent of Africa, producing some informative posters full of interesting facts. In Science we made air resistant parachutes to try and protect our egg astronauts. Well done for working well with your groups to discuss and decide how to make your parachute air resistant. In French we learnt how to tell someone what food we had in our lunch box!

Josh won the good work award for working well and thoughtfully with his team in Science - well done Josh! Maisie and Maddy won the star writer awards for their wonderful versions of the apache myth which both including lots of extra well chosen detail and were exciting to read - well done girls! Well done to Alex P and Mollie H who impressed their maths teachers by being wonderful mathematicians. As always well done to everyone for working hard and making these decisions extremely difficult to make.

Friday 25th September 2015

We've had another busy week this week in Lourdes class. We enjoyed going to our first mass of the academic year today, up at church. On Thursday, we enjoyed our first music lesson where we were introduced to the first of three instruments we will be playing this year. In Literacy, we wrote letters to a child in Africa called Zahra telling her all about our life, the differences between her life and our life and asking her questions about life in Africa. In big writing we finished off our ghost stories and scared Miss Blackburn with our spooky stories when she marked them - well done everyone they were incredibly terrifying! In RE we discussed how we could use our qualities and talents to help and benefit other people and reasons for why we do this.

Friday 18th September 2015

We've had another busy week this week in Lourdes class! We had our class assembly on Thursday which was all about our qualities and talents - well done everyone you all worked extremely hard towards this and Miss Evans and I are so proud of you for doing a fantastic job! We started music this week and enjoyed meeting our new music teachers for this half term. We looked at some of the instruments we would use - ukuleles, trumpets and recorders and we can't wait to start playing them. In big writing we enjoyed writing the opening to a ghost story - well done on your scary story openers I was terrified reading them!

Well done to our award winners this week. Emily won the courtesy award for always being her polite, friendly and bubbly self and just generally being a joy to teach in Lourdes class! Syzmon won the good work award for his thoughtful ideas in RE about being a peacemaker - well done Szymon! Callum won the star writer for his petrifying and hooking ghost story opening - well done Callum! Well done Joe for impressing Mr Ward with your mathematical skills this week! Once again, well done everyone for putting in 100% effort this week and making these decisions really difficult to make!

We've had an exciting week our first full week in Lourdes class. We've been writing diary entries based on a story of a child in other cultures in Literacy. We've been learning all about the gifts of our qualities and talents in RE. We've been learning about the seven continents and in particular Europe this week, in our topic lesson. We've been learning all about the force of gravity in Science this week. I've been really impressed this first week as you've all tried extremely hard and put in 100% effort, keep up the good work!

Leah won the good work award for her thoughtful ideas in Literacy - well done Leah! Freddie won the star writer for his hooking and exciting film review all about Jurassic World - well done Freddie! Once again, well done to everyone for trying hard this week and making these decisions so difficult for me!
