Friday 20th May

Well done Year 6 for such impeccable behaviour at the Briars last weekend - everyone had such a great time!  Scroll down to see some action-packed photographs. 

This week, you have written some lovely recounts about the trip to the Briars.  In Maths, you have worked really hard to calculate surface area of cuboids and the volume of cylinders.  In RE, we have continued to learn about people who have been true witnesses to Jesus, through the way they have lived their lives.

'School Mission Award' went to Niamh for being such a lovely, well mannered and helpful member of year 6 who always gives her very best.

'Good Work Award' went to Sophie for great work with Mrs Brough using the sewing machine to make her rainforest explorer's bag. 

'Marvellous Mathematician' went to Lizzie for making super progress this year and  particularly for her efforts this morning - finding the volume of cylinders!

'Star Writer' went to Aidan for a lovely recount about our trip to the Briars - including lots of the success criteria.

Next week, we'll hopefully arrange an afternoon at Coronation park as we won the attendance award for Spring half term.

Friday 6th May 2016

This week we have continued to look at different types of letters in Literacy - we wrote persuasive letters to Mr Harrison to persuade him not to ban first play.  In Maths, we have done a few practise tests and tried to revise lots of different areas.  In Big writing, we finished our discussion texts about whether cyber-schooling should be introduced to the UK or not.  In Music, you sang the Bruno Mars song beautifully - hopefully we'll be able to include it in our leaver's assembly.

'School Mission Award' went to Caitlin for being such a lovely, well mannered member of year 6 who always tries her very best - a super role model to her peers.

'Good Work Award' went to all of Y6.  Well done and thank you to all of you, for your hard work and effort at home and at school towards preparing for the up-coming SATS tests. 

'Marvellous Mathematician' went to Noori for great effort developing Reasoning skills.  His scores are constantly improving and he really perseveres!

'Headteacher's Good Work' went to Dominik for really improved arithmetic scores 40/40 this week - well done.

Friday 29th April

Well done - you have all worked extremely hard this week.  In Literacy, we continued our new topic on letters and wrote letters of complaint.  In Big Writing, you have started to write some really good discussion texts about cyber-schooling.  In RE, we looked at how the disciples of Jesus became witnesses to him and what we can do to be his witnesses.  Lots of you represented our school really well at cross country and were a real credit to our school. You have also done a lot of work towards preparing for SATS this week - all of your hard work and efforts will pay off!!

'School Mission Award' went to Daniel for always trying his very best, even when he finds something difficult, for his enthusiasm, smile and being a super role model to others.

'Good Work Award' went to William for working hard in all lessons, especially Literacy and learning all the new terms associated with the grammar, punctuation and spelling test.

'Marvellous Mathematician' went to Lilly for great effort developing Reasoning skills.  Her scores are constantly improving!

'Sportsperson' this week went to Bradley - well done!

'Headteacher's Good Work' went to Sophie for excellent progress in all areas of the curriculum and always with a smile on her face.

Welcome back after the Easter holidays - we hope you all had a wonderful break and have come back ready to work hard this half term towards SATS.

This morning, we went to Mass to celebrate the beginning of the new school term - your final term at The Priory!!  Thank you to all of you who helped lead the Mass through reading so beautifully.

This week, we started our new Literacy topic on letters - we wrote letters of explanation.  In RE, we started our new topic on Witnesses and thought about times in our lives when we'd witnessed something happening that wasn't right.  In Music, Mrs Harrison started the new history of music topic with you.  We have got lots to cover this half term - please scroll down to read a copy of this half term's newsletter.

Friday 11th March   no

Today in Science, we investigated how the length of shadows changed throughout the afternoon - scroll down for photographs.  In DT, we used the paper patterns which we made to cut out the fabric ready to make our explorer's bags.  In Literacy, we have been learning how to write a good argument and in Maths we have been learning to find the area of triangles, parallelograms and compound shapes.

'School Mission Award' went to Sophie for always having a smile on her face and enjoying lessons.

'Good Work Award' went to Noah for his work in Literacy (writing arguments) and Science (investigating shadows).

'Marvellous Mathematician' went to Aidan for great effort in basic skills parts of lessons this week.  His work is always beautifully presented and he does so much at home to improve his skills.

'Sportsperson' this week went to Owen - well done!

 

Next week should be a really exciting week in school - as it's Science week.  Mad Science are in school on Thursday morning.

Friday 4th March

Today we had a special 'Year of Mercy' Liturgy at the end of the day, which was led for us by Mr Dosh and some of the children from each class.  This week in Science we started our new topic on light and looked at diagrams of the human eye and wrote simple explanations of how each part worked - the children were fascinated to learn that we actually see things upside down!  In Literacy, we started our new topic on 'Arguments and Discussion Texts' and read lots of examples to unpick key features.

This week in Literacy we have been writing up our quest stories based on Blodden's Adventure.  In R.E. we started our topic on 'Unity' and what makes and breaks friendships.

This week we had the book fair in school - thank you to all of you in Y6 who gave up your time after school to sell books for us.  Also this week we had parent's evening.  Well done to all of you who took part in the swimming gala on Thursday and represented our school so well.

Friday 5th February 2016

 

Today, we had the Olympic Swimmer Joe Roebuck in school.  He gave a really inspirational talk about how he became a successful swimmer and how you should not give up on your goals and dreams.  We had a very energetic circuit of exercises to complete - thank you to all of you for bringing in your sponsorship money - you can continue to bring it in next week.

 

Congratulations to Lizzie for winning this week's Mission Statement Award for being such a polite, kind, hardworking member of Y6.

This week in Geography we learnt about the 4 layers of the rainforest and did some drawing and writing about them.  In DT, we created designs and specifications for our rainforest explorer bags.  In Science, we looked at different predators and matched them to their prey - we looked at features that enabled them to be good at hunting or avoid their prey.  In RE, we compared 4 versions of the Feeding of the 5000 to see how similar/different they were.

This week we have learnt about the climate in a tropical rainforest and compared it to our country.  In DT, we practiced our sewing skills by making simple bags out of t-shirts.  In Literacy we have been writing up our final newspaper reports about the break-in to the 3 bear's cottage.

We've had a busy week starting all of our new topics.  This week in Literacy, we started learning about Journalistic writing - if you'd like to bring any newspapers in for quiet reading that would be great.  In geography, we started our topic on Rainforests and thought about where in the world rainforests are located.  In DT, we started our topic linked to Rainforests - we're going to design and make bags for a rainforest explorer.  In Science, we started our new topic on Inheritance and evolution - we learnt about what a species is and how to draw a histogram.

We've had a very busy week!! On Monday morning, we went to Edward House and entertained the elderly residents there with your lovely carol singing.  Well done for a super D.A.R.E. graduation on Wednesday - D.A.R.E. officer Harper has thoroughly enjoyed working with you all and will miss coming into our school.  Well done to Asia and Sam for winning the 2 prizes.  (Scroll down for photographs). We finished our pizza topic - your christmas designs were fantastic and all of your finished pizzas looked fantastic. (Scroll down for photographs). This morning, we celebrated a lovely Mass for the end of term and this afternoon sing for santa.

Friday 11th December 2015

 

This week we have finished reading Kensuke's Kingdom, which I know all of you loved and you all came up with some super alternative endings.  In DT, we tested out our ideas by altering ingredients in our basic pizza recipe, ready to design our own next week. 

Today you all did a wonderful job organising and running the stalls for our Christmas fair - well done for helping the PTA to raise money for our school.

 

Don't forget next week is our D.A.R.E. graduation - Wednesday 16th december at 9am - all parents and grandparents welcome!  Don't forget to practise your words.

Today we've had a great Christmas activity day and made cards, crackers, gift bags, Christmas glasses  and baubles.

This week we have continued to read Kensuke's Kingdom in Literacy, which the children all love listening to.  In Geography, we looked at what the inside of a volcano looks like and drew cross sections of it.  In DT, we learned how to use a basic recipe to make pizzas.  In Science, we looked at the characteristics of living things and the 5 kingdoms living things can be classified into.

This week we started our new topics.  In Geography, we are learning about Volcanoes and looked at how the earth is split up into different layers.  In DT, we started our new topic on Pizzas and had great fun tasting different types of pizza on Friday.  In Literacy, we have started reading the novel Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo.  In Science, we have started our topic on Classification.

On Monday this week, we celebrated Year 6 Class Mass with Father Berry.  Afterwards, we interviewed Father Berry about his vocation to priesthood, which is part of our new topic in RE.  In RE, we talked about the commitment people show in their jobs and why people decide to serve others.  In Literacy, we have started to design and write the information to go inside our leaflets for Beauvale Priory.  In History, we learnt about the Foundation of Beauvale Priory.  As part of our Art lesson this week, we designed our own Christmas Cards.

This week we had a lovely day out on Tuesday - as part of our History, Art and Literacy topics we walked to Beauvale Priory.  Anne gave us a guided tour of the Priory ruins and talked to us about its intriguing history.  We also went for a walk around the farm and saw a bird of prey.  Unfortunately, we couldn't sit and draw the landscape as the rain clouds came, so we went back to school and spent the afternoon drawing. Another busy week in Year 6 - this week some of you took part in the level 1 and 2 Bikeability course - well done for passing and learning the important skills of riding your bikes carefully on the roads.  Unfortunately, Class Mass was cancelled on Monday but we'll arrange another date as soon as possible.  This week in Literacy, we finished writing up our family biographies - well done they are fantastic pieces of writing.  Today the charity team helped Mrs Brough to organise the MacMillan Cancer Fundraiser - thanks to all of you for donating cakes, wearing green and buying cakes after school.  In Science this afternoon, we had fun drawing around our bodies on the playground in chalk - we had to draw on where our hearts are and calculate blood flow from our hearts to different parts of our bodies, like the ends of our toes. Today we celebrated 'Harvest Mass' in Church to mark the beginning of the new school year.  Year 6 led Mass very well - well done to all of you who read so confidently and thank you to those who took part in the Offertory.  As we had Mass this morning, there was no celebration assembly today.

Well done Y6 for all of your hard work and efforts again this week.

In Literacy we continued our topic on biographies and have looked at the difference between open and closed questions.  We have come up with some interview questions - please don't forget to interview a member of your family over the weekend - the more detailed the answers the better your biography will be.

In Science we looked at the ideas of the famous scientist William Harvey and what he found out about the heart and how blood travels around the body.

In Art we evaluated different paintings by famous artists - so that we can steal ideas to use in our watercolour paintings of Beauvale Priory.  In History we found about Henry V111 and why he wanted a divorce from his wife Catherine of Aragon and you wrote some fantastic diary entries by Henry.

In Literacy we have started our work on biographies and have found out about the lives of John Lennon, Vincent Van Gogh and Barack Obama to name just a few.  In Science we started out topic about 'Ourselves' and looked at and drew cross sections of the human heart.  In RE we started our 'Loving' topic.  We talked about all of the things that are done for us by the people who love and care for us and you have all created some lovely montages of photographs which depict love and care.  Scroll down to see a picture of our display.  In History we started to think of questions we'd like to find out about in our topic about Beauvale Priory.

Also DARE lessons started this week.

 

Today we had our first Celebration Assembly of the new school year.
