After finishing SATS, year 6 went to the Briars for the weekend.  We spent Friday by Cromford Canal taking part in Bush-craft, Canoeing and Wall Climbing.

Friday 24th February

This week the children finished their vehicles in DT - scroll down for photographs.  In Literacy, we started our new topic on Explanation texts.  In History, we started our new topic on Beauvale Priory and thought about questions we would like to investigate.  In RE, we were finding out about the Eucharistic Prayer.

'Good Work Award' went to Will Brown for super effort with his work about the Firework-Maker's daughter.

'Marvellous Mathematician' went to Euan for great understanding of BODMAS and reasoning skills.

'Star Writer' went to Szymon for his explanation writing.

The children have all settled back into school and are working hard this half term.  Please scroll down for a copy of this half term's newsletter.  So far, we have started our new Literacy topic and are learning how to write a discussion text.  In Geography, we have started our topic on Volcanoes.  We thought about some enquiry questions and learnt about how the earth is split up into different layers.  In RE, we started our topic on sources - we looked at different types of books and how they enrich our lives.  We have also started to learn about the Bible and how to reference Scripture.  In Science and DT we have started our topic on controllable toy vehicles and electricity.

Thank you for all of your help today year 6 running the Christmas Fair with the PTA.  A big thanks to all of you who stayed until the very end and helped to clean up the hall and put everything away. This week, we finished our pizza topic in DT. We had a great afternoon cooking our festive pizzas - scroll down to see how they all looked. In Literacy, we continued to read Kensuke's Kingdom.

This week, our daily Advent services started - please join us as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus by learning about his ancestors/family tree.  We have also started our reverse Advent Calendar - if your child brings home a brown bag, please can they donate an item of food, which will be sent to a local food bank. Today everyone enjoyed making Christmas cards, tree decorations, gift bags, party hats and biscuits as part of our Christmas activity day.  This week, we continued our pizza topic in DT. We designed our own festive Christmas pizzas and altered the basic pizza recipe. They all looked great! In Literacy, we continued to read Kensuke's Kingdom.

Today was non-uniform day - thank you to all of you for donating chocolate towards our Christmas Fair. This week, we continued our pizza topic in DT.  We had a great afternoon altering the basic pizza recipe by adding/changing ingredients. They looked and tasted great. Scroll down for photos. 'Mission Statement Award' went to Dylan for being a calm, caring member of year 6.  He is a great role model to his peers and the younger children.  He always tries his very best.

'Good Work Award' went to Ellie. For putting 100% effort into everything we do.  Always participates in class discussions and produces lots of written work - well done.

'Marvellous Mathematician' went to Leah for being able to measure acute and obtuse angles more accurately using a protractor.

'Star Writer' went to Isaac for a great biography about his dad; Harrison for much improved quality and quantity of his work and Charlie for a super explanation of how the circulatory system works.

This week we celebrated a lovely class Mass with Father Berry about friendship.  Also, RSPB were in Year 6 on Thursday afternoon.

 This week's award winners:

'Mission Statement Award' went to Euan for being a super role model to his peers.  He has a very positive attitude in class towards learning and is a very kind, caring young man.

'Good Work Award' went to Molly for putting 100% effort into everything we do, especially for completing all of her homework to the standard expected and completing her reading journal in so much detail.

'Marvellous Mathematician' went to Joe for super presentation of his work in his book and effort with multiplication of 4-digit by 2-digit numbers.

'Star Writer' went to Orla for her super persuasive play-script about trying to persuade her mum and dad to let her stay up late..

This week, we have started most of our new topics.  In Literacy, we have been looking at biographies about famous people.  In Art and History, we have started our topic on the early Islamic Civilization and found out about the importance of Baghdad.  In RE, we have started to look at what love means to us and reflected upon all the things that are done for us by the people who love and care for us.  In Science, we have started our topic on the Circulatory System and drew cross diagrams of the human heart.

The children have settled very well into Year 6 this week.  

We have had lots of fun getting to know you all over the last few days, whilst taking part in lots of team building activities  (scroll down to the bottom of the page to see some photographs of our team building games! )

This morning, we celebrated Mass at Church to celebrate the beginning of our new school year - thank you to all of you who read so beautifully!

Today you have also produced some beautiful banners to illustrate the 'Corporal Acts of Mercy' and the 'Spiritual Acts of Mercy' - scroll down to see your art work.
